5 Minutes with Elle Halliwell, founder of Auricle Ear seeds

Auricle Ear Seeds - Minutes with Elle Halliwell, founder of Auricle Ear seeds

What are the most common reasons people purchase Ear Seeds?
Stress! Which is very concerning. So many of us live in a state of low level chronic stress, which over time can lead to burnout and adrenal fatigue. So it’s really important that we incorporate activities every day which helps to switch our bodies from a sympathetic (fight or flight) state, to a ‘rest and digest’ state. Deep breathing, meditation and ear acupressure all help to stimulate our vagus nerve, which is responsible for helping the body return to a relaxed state.

Are Ear Seeds suitable for everyone?
If you’re pregnant, we suggest only using it if you have them applied by a registered acupuncturist. Some people can also be sensitive to certain adhesives and metals, so we suggest doing a patch test before use.

What exactly does an Auriculotherpist do?
An auriculotherapist specialises in acupressure of the ear. Most auricular therapists have either a background in natural health eg naturopathy, or acupuncture.

Are there celebrities that use ear seeds?
So many! Penelope Cruz, The Kardashians, Naomi Campbell and Gwyneth Paltrow are a few which come to mind. I’ve applied seeds to a number of Australian celebrities, but I never seed and tell!

Do they have to be professionally placed and what would you recommend people do to make application easy?
The great thing about ear seeds is that they work via pressure, so they’re non-invasive and don’t involve needles, making them safe and easy to apply at home. All you need is a mirror, a pair of tweezers and a protocol guide (which our kits come with). Then using your tweezers, peel the seed away from the strip, place sticky-side against the ear, hold down with your finger and gently remove the tweezers.

Are there any side effects or discomfort people can experience?
Some points can feel extra sensitive, which indicates it’s an area which needs seeding. You may find that once the corresponding area feels relief, eg back pain etc, then the seed will begin to feel less sensitive. But if it starts to itch or feel very hot, you may be allergic to the tape, so as mentioned above, make sure you do a patch test first. Seeds which are left on too long can also sometimes leave a small mark, which can last for a couple of days, but this depends on the skin’s sensitivity. It will go away though!

Can you share your most special customer review?
I had a hairdresser see me for chronic shoulder pain, and as soon as I placed the seeds on her she was able to move her shoulder freely without pain. She was so amazed she started making the sign of the cross! Some people cwill find teh seeds work almost instantly; for others it may take a day or two. But I’m a big believer that if there was one modality which worked for everyone then they would only be one modality around. Some people find ear seeds the only thing which helps, but it’s not for everyone.

What do you do for self-care when you have a minute between juggling everything in your business?
I’ve found that turning simple tasks into triggers for mindfulness really helps. Folding laundry, unstacking the dishwasher, and cooking are all activities I use to clear my mind and focus on the moment. And walking. So much walking!

We’d love to know what books you’re currently reading…
Anatomy of The Spirit by Carolyn Myss and Becoming Supernatural (again!) by Joe Dispenza.

You’re a Bondi local. Can you share your favourite places to visit for self-care and why?
I really love Slow House for their Infrared saunas. The space is so divine. For float therapy my go-to is Bondi Massage and Float centre at Bondi Junction; it’s hidden in a little laneway and I’ve been having floats there for years. I also practice yoga at BodyMindLife and love a session with Leah Simmonds at Kaaiaa.

Can you share a moment or activity that you love doing with your mother when you get to see her?
What makes it so special? Mum lives in Brisbane now, so whenever she comes back to Sydney I take her out for oysters at a restaurant where we can see Sydney’s beautiful coastline.

You are a mother yourself, what is your favourite moment of being a mother so far?
It’s maybe a bit cliche, but the tiny moments are usually the ones I cherish most. Last week Tor was engrossed in making a pillow fort, and all of a sudden he poked his head out and gave me the most heart melting, joyous smile. I wanted my mind to capture that image forever.

What does love like a mother mean to you?
It’s the worst and the best thing ever all at the same time. Your heart is walking around outside your body, enclosed in this fragile little human, and you’re bombarded with floods of pure joy and adoration one second then fear, and/or frustration the next. It’s a complete emotional rollercoaster but one I wouldn’t get off for the world.

What will you be doing this Mother’s Day?
I’m hoping it’s being organised right now! Anything which requires minimal effort on my part and lots of delicious food. And a homemade card of course!
